1954-1967

The "Lumocolor" brand is registered on 30th April 1954.	The first product with the name "Mars-Lumocolor" launched onto the market by STAEDTLER in the early 60s is not an ink-based product like today's, but a twist-action pen with a special lead designed for OHP applications.	The special "Mars-Lumocolor" pen is available in nine different colours and comes equipped with a black barrel, twist cap in the colour of the lead and clip.

In 1967, STAEDTLER is the first manufacturer to bring out a fibre-tip pen with a special water-soluble ink for overhead projection purposes in 8 brilliant colours: the STAEDTLER Lumocolor.	This opens up a whole new product field.

1968-1973

At the end of the 60s, STAEDTLER develops the Lumocolor permanent fibre-tip pen with waterproof ink for OHP applications.	These Lumocolor pens bear a strong resemblance to the present-day products: the permanent pens have a black barrel with white imprint, the non-permanent pens have a grey barrel with black imprint.	Both have caps and end plugs in the colour of the ink.

1974-1978

At the end of 1973, chisel-tipped overhead markers are added to the Lumocolor range. The Lumocolor 305, another model with clip, and the Lumocolor F 306, equipped with a particularly fine tip, round off the assortment.	At this time, the technical drawing field is one of STAEDTLER's core competence areas. As a result, a lot of time and energy is invested in developing more innovative ideas for further expanding this product segment.	More writing instruments and accessories targeted at OHP users are developed in cooperation with experts from the education sector and film manufacturers.

In 1977 the Lumocolor cartridge pen with stainless steel drafting tube in three line widths - for a consistent line width and for use with lettering guides - and Lumoplast, a special eraser for erasing inks from overhead film are launched onto the market.	In the same year, the company is busy working on another new product, an OHP pen with superfine, metal-clad tip. Lumocolor S 311 removable and S 313 permanent are ready for market launch in November 1977.	These models hardly differ from contemporary products in shape, size and design.

All Lumocolor writing instruments are available individually or in sets of 4, 6, or 8 pens. Special sets comprising pens, erasers and compasses with fibre-tip pen adapters round of the Lumocolor range.

STAEDTLER continues to work on developing the product still further, taking increased demand and new requirements and applications into account.  Once again, in 1977, it is STAEDTLER which is the first company to bring out an OHP pen in line width F (0.6 mm) followed, one year later, by line width S (0.4 mm).

1979-1999

By the end of the 90s five different tips for Lumocolor pens are now available along with a wide range of film. In 1996, the refill station, designed for the refilling of both ink types and all line widths is introduced.	The STAEDTLER box - an innovative and since patented multi-purpose packaging - is developed for Lumocolor and successfully launched on to the market in the year 2000.

2000-2004

The STAEDTLER box - a unique packaging idea is today used for a variety of product lines. The STAEDTLER box concept is distinguished with the "red dot design award 2003" for exceptional design and functionality by the Design Centre North Rhine Westphalia.

In the year 2000, STAEDTLER  presents Lumocolor for the first time with the special DRY SAFE feature which enables pens to be uncapped for days at a time without drying up. Even after longer breaks in writing, the uncapped universal pens remain ready for action without delay. The DRY SAFE feature also significantly increases the storage life of the products.

2002 sees the launch of the STAEDTLER Lumocolor permanent special, suitable for a number of special applications, e. g. writing and marking on teflon and nano-treated surfaces.	In the optometry field, spectacle glass with a scratch-resistant, "easy-to-clean" coating is used. The Lumocolor permanent special is currently the only fine marker worldwide which remains smudge-proof and waterproof when used on such surfaces.	What's more, it has a particularly colour-intensive, neutral-smelling, fast-drying and extremely lightfast ink. The black ink is even weatherproof and can therefore be used for outdoor applications.

In 2004, Lumocolor's anniversary year, another new member of the STAEDTLER Lumocolor family is due to be launched: The STAEDTLER Lumocolor permanent compact is a compact-sized universal all-rounder.	Not only is it convenient and comfortable to use as a pen for writing purposes, it also doubles up as a compact marker for labelling and marking applications.	It comes equipped with a sturdy tip for variable line widths which is locked into the barrel. What's more, the STAEDTLER Lumocolor compact possesses outstanding lightfast qualities making it ideal for outdoor applications too.

The STAEDTLER Lumocolor range currently comprises 8 line widths in up to 8 colours which excel thanks to their high degree of lightfastness. Flipchart markers and whiteboard markers are also part of the Lumocolor range, as are a variety of dry markers.

These products - available with either water-soluble or waterproof lead, as wood-cased pencils or in leadholder form - have become indispensable tools in a whole variety of sectors and are used, for example, by the car industry and well-known fast-food chains. It goes without saying that STAEDTLER will continue to work intensively on developing this product still further, constantly optimising and extending the range.
